Born to avenge, Piccolo has always been very "no nonsense".    Some would say he was avenging his father but that's not really accurate.  Namek's are more or less asexual in nature.  To "procreate" they simply spit up an egg.  SO technically it wasn't his fathers death, but for all intents and purposes the theory holds.  

He had an objective of going after Goku.  Piccolo entered the scene using "Ma Junior" as his name in the tournament.  Goku wouldn't be defeated.

When Raditz arrived Piccolo was excited to be the one to deliver the blow that would kill Goku thru the process of killing Raditz.  He did however hear Raditz mention that two other Saiyans (Vegeta and Napa) were coming to Earth.  Piccolo saw the potential in little Gohan and decided to train him.  Of course, the way Piccolo trained him was a little un-orthodox.  He literally dropped Gohan in the desert and told him to survive.  After many months of this survival training Piccolo had actually almost begun to like the boy.  See, Piccolo never had any nice thoughts or feelings but Gohan was slowly getting to him.  He would occasionally bring him food and drop it down if Gohan were hungry.  After they began to do the actual training Piccolo grew even more fond of the boy.  Gohan always calls him "Mr. Piccolo" (until he is much older).  The green guy had no idea he was setting himself up to be Gohan's mentor (Gohan would dress like Piccolo for a very long time).

Piccolo is a very strong and brave fighter!  He has some really neat qualities because he is from Namek.  If Piccolo loses an arm - it grows back.. he also has very sensitive ears (in one of the movies he actually ripped his ears off due to noise issues.)

Piccolo wasn't very much fun on King Kais planet - he was actually a down right party pooper.  He trained alone and wouldn't indulge in any of the humor available from King Kai.  Also, Piccolo didn't eat.  See, Namek's don't need to.  They survive on water alone.

On the planet Namek Piccolo comes across a dying Namekian.  Piccolo and Nail decide to fuse.  Piccolo was his funniest when this happened.  He started jumping around yelling about how great he felt.  It was truly out of character and refreshing.

Basically Piccolo is a straight shooter who always is ready for the challenge.  He was able to overcome his hatred for Goku and I believe a part of that was due to his caring for Gohan.  As much as it annoyed him to be attached to the kid, he was hooked for life.

Piccolo is a crucial player thru much of DBZ.  Once Buu is on the scene we see him become the trainer again.  He must teach Trunks and Goten how to do the fusion dance - something he saw Kakarott do once and then later did with Kakarott as an example.  

Its important to note that Piccolo and Kami are connected - in a way, they are one.  If one should die, then so does the other.  This creates major issues!  At one point Piccolo has grown to love Gohan so much that he literally gives his life for him.
